Despite the blue-collar affectations of some of its most visible leaders or the populist rhetoric of its most vocal cheerleaders, it has never been more obvious that the Republican Party is the party of the boss, and in particular the party of the small-business tyrant. Who or what is the small business tyrant? It’s the business owner whose livelihood rests on a steady supply of low-wage labor; who opposes unions, resents even the most cursory worker protections and employee safety regulations, and who views those workers as little more than extensions of himself, to use as he sees fit. The small-business tyrant is, to borrow an argument from the writer and podcaster Patrick Wyman, an especially reactionary member of America’s landowning gentry: local economic elites whose wealth comes primarily from their ownership of physical assets. Those assets, Wyman explains, “vary depending on where in the country we’re talking about; they could be a bunch of McDonald’s franchises in Jackson, Mississippi, a beef-processing plant in Lubbock, Texas, a construction company in Billings, Montana, commercial properties in Portland, Maine, or a car dealership in western North Carolina.”To look at Republican politics at the state level is to see an economic agenda dominated by the worst of this particular class.

It turns out, that includes how far a $100,000 salary will get you, according to a recent SmartAsset study. A six-figure income offers the most purchasing power in El Paso, Texas, the study found. In El Paso, a $100,000 salary amounts to around $88,840 after taking out those expenses. One factor potentially fueling the Lone Star State's dominance is its tax friendliness, since Texas does not collect state income taxes. However, residents still pay federal income taxes and face some of the highest property taxes in the country.

I listened to “Motorway to Roswell” by the Pixies a million times, but it’s not exactly where this movie came from. paperbacks I inhaled as a nerdy kid in Lubbock, Texas, and partly it was Lubbock itself. Then I took Robb Moss’s nonfiction filmmaking class at Harvard. For Marker, movies don’t replace our memories, exactly, but they create a little memorial in the place where a memory used to be. Paxton said the claim was based on only two months of clinical trial data, and vaccine recipients' "absolute risk reduction" showed that the vaccine was just 0.85% effective. Infectious disease experts have said relative risk reduction is a more meaningful way to judge a vaccine's efficacy than absolute risk reduction. Relative risk shows how well a vaccine protects recipients relative to a study's control group. "Pfizer did not tell the truth about their COVID-19 vaccines," Paxton said in a statement. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Trae Young put on a show for nearly 20,000 fans in the NBA's regular-season game in Mexico City. Young scored 41 points, then fed Dejounte Murray for a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left to give the Atlanta Hawks a 120-119 victory over the Orlando Magic on Thursday night. It was the league’s 32nd game in Mexico since 1992, more than any country outside the U.S. and Canada. Mexico has an NBA G League team that had a successful first year playing at the Arena Ciudad the Mexico. Positive feedback from former NBA players who reside in Mexico City might help the city on its bid for a franchise in the future, but for now the only thing certain is more regular season games.

In recent months, abortion opponents in Texas have succeeded in passing a growing number of local ordinances to prevent people from helping women travel to have abortions in nearby states that still allow the procedure. On Monday, Lubbock County, a conservative hub of more than 300,000 residents near the border with New Mexico, became the largest county yet to enact such a ban. The county commissioners court, after a public meeting that drew occasionally impassioned testimony, voted to make it illegal for anyone to transport a pregnant woman through the county, or pay for her travel, for the purpose of seeking an abortion. The county, which includes the city of Lubbock and Texas Tech University, joined three other far smaller counties — one along the New Mexico border and two others in the middle of the state — in passing ordinances that were drafted in part by the architect of Texas’s six-week abortion ban, adopted in 2021 even before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. The city of Amarillo, in the Texas Panhandle, on Tuesday was set to consider a similar ordinance, which would apply to a network of roads and highways that pass through the city of 200,000 and lead toward New Mexico and Colorado, states where many Texas women have traveled for procedures.

A few hours north, the Amarillo City Council on Tuesday will weigh its own such law, which could lead to a future council or city-wide vote. He took that approach in Odessa's city elections in 2022 after the council initially blocked one of his "sanctuary city for the unborn" proposals. Not all backers of abortion restrictions support Dickson's transport bans, however. The debates over the transport bans are spurring new shows of support for abortion access. Abortion rights supporters, including four abortion funds in Texas, said they expected the transport bans to backfire on the anti-abortion movement by galvanizing political participation from abortion rights advocates in the lead-up to next year's presidential election.

July 21 (Reuters) - Apollo Global Management Inc (APO.N) co-founder Leon Black paid $62.5 million to the U.S. Virgin Islands to avoid any legal claims tied to a Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking investigation, the New York Times reported on Friday. The Times obtained a copy of the settlement agreement from the Virgin Islands government through a public records request. A spokesperson for Black confirmed in an emailed statement to Reuters that Black had settled with the Virgin Islands, noting that there was no suggestion in the settlement "that Mr. Black was aware of or participated in any misconduct." The spokesperson went on to say that, as previously known, Black had paid Epstein for "legitimate financial advisory services" and that Black had "resolved the (Virgin Island's) potential claims arising out of the unintended consequences of those payments." A New York state judge in May dismissed a lawsuit accusing Black, 71, of defaming a woman by falsely claiming she tried to extort him after accusing him of rape, which he denied.
